The Alternative Living Unit (ALU) Program is Target Community & Educational Services' oldest program. This program provides the most structured living environment that we offer. It has been designed specifically to foster independence and community integration for individuals with disabilities within a safe, structured atmosphere. Currently, Target operates nine ALUs -- seven in Carroll County and two in Montgomery County.
Each Target ALU is a two or three bedroom home owned by Target Community and Educational Services. These homes, each of which contains a separate staff apartment, have been specifically designed to accommodate the individual and collective needs of our consumers as well as the staff who help care for them. In addition, the ALUs are located in neighborhood communities, providing for an enriched living environment and fostering recreational options, opportunities for personal and professional growth, and community integration.
In addition to its two or three consumers, each ALU is home to two full-time Community Living Managers providing an excellent staff to consumer ration. As a condition of their employment with Target, these house counselors are enrolled a specialized Master's Degree Program at McDaniel College. This ensures that the staff supervising our consumers are highly educated and well trained. It also helps to reduce the high turnover rate that plagues much of the human services field.
The ALU Program is headed by Dr. Tom Zirpoli, President/CEO. Feel free to contact him or to call 410-848-9090 for more information about the program.
